An international artist for the DOC Tullum

31 July 2009
From Scotland to Tollo to christen a project "of wine". Charles Harris, a world-famous Scottish painter, representative of the New Traditionalism, will be the exceptional godfather of the doc Tullum.

For the opening of the first shop dedicated to the smallest doc in Italy, the international artist Charles Harris flies from Scotland to Italy.

A Scottish painter of international fame and an exponent of New Traditionalism, will be the special host for Tullum doc.
On July 31 at 7 o’clock Harris himself will host the opening of the first shop of feudo Antico, the first winery to sell Tullum doc.

The artist will not go away without leaving his mark because the shop will be embellished with his art. It will not, however, be his first contribution to the doc: Harris, in fact, did the water painting of the Tollo countryside which has been used in the image of the wine and gave the rights to the painting to the village.

The ceremony on July 31 will be open to the public who will have the opportunity to try the three doc Feudo Antico wines which have been launched on the market so far: Tullum Bianco, Tullum Passerina, Tullum Pecorino.

It will not be just the simple opening of a shop but a day of rejoicing for the whole village which, thanks to Tullum, has rediscovered some of its history and put an end to the political rivalries which have plagued the village for decades.

After the presentation in June Tullum will now dedicate a moment to its people, who have contributed so much to the success of this doc.

Tollo is a village with 4,200 inhabitants, nearly all of whom are wine growers and the history of this doc, one of the smallest in Italy, is unique in its kind.
The village was completely destroyed during the Second World War but thanks to its activity of vine growing it was able to reconstruct its identity. Today Tullum doc is a striking example of regional oenology after 40 years in which Abruzzo produced almost exclusively Trebbiano and Montepulciano.

“Tullum wants to enhance the territory of Tollo which has a strong vocation for vine growing” says Andrea Di Fabio, sales manager of Feudo Antico, the company which will sell Tullum. “We started from studies of the soil, the microclimate and the grafting, then we indentified the areas on the cadastral maps where we authorized the production of certain vines.”

For the first time with Tullum the autochthonous Pecorino and Passerina have become doc thanks to the winery’s decision to limit production, produce with a density of 3,300 plants, exclude vineyards below 80m above sea level and insist on vinification and bottling in the Tollo area.

Tullum has thus created an opportunity for the wines of Abruzzo, by aiming at the modern consumer who is looking for quality, sustainability, healthiness and ethics in wine. Tullum: a “historical” wine, conceived for today’s and tomorrow’s markets.

Who is Charles Harris: defined by British critics as one of the most promising painters of the future, Harris is the founder of New Traditionalism.

He has received the prestigious London prize of “Freedom of the City” and numerous other recognitions, including “Best Unofficial Ambassador for Scotland”.

At the end of the eighties he represented Great Britain at Moscow, Saint Petersburgh and other important cities. He is best known for his portraits and landscapes. When painting landscapes, Harris is the only contemporary artist who paints exclusively in open spaces, immersed in nature and continues to work whatever the weather conditions.

His works are admired by the Queen, the prince of Wales and Tony Blair.
